Who We Are
DiGioia, Gray & Associates, LLC was founded in 2004 by Anthony M. DiGioia, Jr. Ph.D., P.E. and
Richard E. Gray, P.G.
DiGioia Gray is a versatile and expanding company with specialized expertise in geotechnical, structural, and environmental engineering. We combine these disciplines on a wide variety of engineering projects to fulfill our client’s needs. Projects include; transmission lines, dams, power plants, coal-combustion product (CCP) landfills and beneficial use, and foundation investigations.
Prior to forming DiGioia Gray, Dr. DiGioia and Mr. Gray were two of the founders of GAI Consultants, Inc., where for 38 years, Dr. DiGioia served as Chairman and President and Mr. Gray as Senior Vice President of Technical Operations. Dr. DiGioia is a leader in the development of structural loading criteria for the design of electric transmission lines. He has conducted extensive foundation research and has been a leader in the development and use of reliability-based design and analysis concepts as applied to transmission line structures and foundations. Dr. DiGioia has extensive experience in the siting and design of coal-combustion product (CCP) landfills and the beneficial use of CCP’s in large tonnage applications, such as roadway embankments and pavements, backfills, site development and airport fills. Dr. DiGioia is currently an adjunct professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Carnegie-Mellon University. Because of his accomplishments, he received the prestigious Metcalf Award from the Engineers Society of Western Pennsylvania in 1998. Mr. Gray is a specialist in soil and rock mechanics, engineering geology, and foundation engineering. His consulting experience includes numerous geotechnical studies for large industrial developments, such as steel mills and fossil fuel, hydroelectric, and nuclear power plants. Mr. Gray is internationally recognized for his work in subsidence engineering. For his achievements in the field of engineering geology, he was awarded the Geological Society of America (GSA) – Engineering Geology Division’s Meritorous Service Award and is an Honorary Member of the Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists.
For their achievements in the field of civil engineering, Dr. DiGioia and Mr. Gray were named Distinguished Members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), an honor bestowed on only 530 members of ASCE since the society was founded in 1852. DiGioia Gray’s founding principals share a common emphasis on quality work, client service, reliability, respect, and integrity – values that are central to the DiGioia Gray business philosophy. These values, along with an objective to meet schedules, commitments and an ability to provide innovative solutions to the most difficult challenges, have earned DiGioia Gray and in particular, Dr. DiGioia and Mr. Gray, a reputation for excellence. To further enhance DiGioia Gray’s engineering capabilities and solid reputation for technical expertise, DiGioia Gray is proud to welcome Mr. Paul Cass and Dr. Enrique Bazan as Associate Members of the firm.
Mr. Cass comes to DiGioia Gray with over 30 years of technical expertise in transmission line, structural and geotechnical engineering from his most recent position as Principal Engineer of Duquesne Light Company. He is a leader in the transmission engineering field and now directs all aspects of Transmission Line Engineering including siting, line design, structural analysis and design, inspection and construction monitoring services, and foundation design and analysis for DiGioia Gray. In addition, his versatile background will compliment DiGioia Gray’s structural and geotechnical staff in the development of industry design standards, training and research.
Dr. Bazan joined DiGioia Gray in 2008 with over 20 years of engineering practice as a consulting engineer. He is a specialist in soil mechanics, foundation engineering, structural engineering, soil-structure interaction phenomena, transmission structures and foundations, foundation testing, seismic design and finite element analysis. His consulting experience includes geotechnical or structural studies for the design, analysis or remedial measures of electric transmission lines, dams, bridges, nuclear power plants, and other industrial facilities. Dr. Bazan is currently an adjunct professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Carnegie-Mellon University.
Our relatively small staff size allows us to become fully involved with our clients and to quickly respond to our clients changing project needs. DiGioia Gray’s current professional staff includes; John Karcher, James Glover, R. James West, Ryan Fandray, Andrew Zorn, and David DiGioia. Our staff members along with Tony DiGioia, Dick Gray, Paul Cass and Enrique Bazan, have combined engineering experience of over 300 years, with nearly 200 years in the siting, design, upgrading/uprating, refurbishment and special studies for electric transmission lines. This enables DiGioia Gray to be effective in executing these types of projects and places DiGioia Gray at the forefront in the development of structural loading agenda, transmission structure foundation research, and the use of reliability-based design and analysis of transmission lines.
